Watch It First
Let’s be honest about what the Squier Sonic Stratocaster is. It is about the cheapest way to get a real, recognisable Strat into your hands, full stop.
It sits right at the bottom of the Squier ladder, below the Affinity, and it exists to be somebody’s very first electric.
The question is not whether it is a pro instrument. It obviously is not. The question is whether it is a good first guitar. And the answer might surprise you.
The Short Version
For the money, it is a shocking amount of guitar. Three pickups, a tremolo, that classic shape, and it plays fine once it is set up. As a first electric it is very hard to beat.

Build and Feel
Poplar body, bolt-on maple neck, maple fingerboard. Light, simple, and exactly what you expect at this end of the market.
The Neck
Slim and easy, with a 9.5-inch radius that suits chords and bends alike. Beginners get on with it fast, which is the whole job.
The narrow tall frets are comfy, and there is nothing weird about the profile. It just feels like a Strat, shrunk in price rather than in ambition.
Hardware
The vintage-style tremolo works, though I would suggest blocking it or leaving it alone if you are new, as heavy dive-bombing will send cheap Strats out of tune.
So How Does It Sound?
Brighter and thinner than pricier Strats, but unmistakably Strat-like. You get that glassy neck-pickup cluck and the spanky in-between quack that made the design famous.
Through a modest amp it covers pop, blues, funk and indie with ease, and it is more than enough to learn some Alice in Chains riffs or clean-channel pop on. For heavier stuff it runs out of grunt, but that is not its job.
The Niggles
Out of the box the setup is a lottery. High action and sharp fret ends are common at this price, so budget for a basic setup or learn to do one yourself.
The ceramic pickups are a bit brittle and noisy compared to better single coils. Fine for learning, first thing you would upgrade later.
And the tuning stability from that trem is only okay. Again, expected, and easily managed.
Who Is It For?
Total beginners, kids, and anyone who wants a cheap, fun, classic-shaped electric to knock about on. Also a great cheap platform for modding once you know your way around.
If your tastes lean heavier, something like the Ibanez GRG131DX or the Epiphone SG Standard will suit rock and metal better.

Verdict
The Squier Sonic Stratocaster is one of the best ultra-budget first guitars you can buy. It is not perfect, it needs a setup, and you will outgrow the pickups. None of that matters at this price.
Get it set up, plug it in, and learn to play. For the cost of a couple of takeaways you get a genuine Strat experience. That is a bargain, plain and simple.
